AfterHours and ArtCrank
I’ve participated in several annual poster exhibitions:
AFTERHOURS invites local artists to create posters based on a specific theme. The posters are then sold, and proceeds benefit a local non-profit organization related to that theme.
The 2019 theme was “Design for Democracy”. Posters were supposed to be nonpartisan, but I think Pedro still qualifies. The theme for 2018 was “Music”, and the posters benefited Kids In a New Groove (KING). The 2017 theme was “Home”, benefiting LifeWorks Austin. In 2016 the charity was Austin Pets Alive. The theme was “Animals” and my poster title: Croc ‘N Roll.
ARTCRANK is “a poster party for bike people”, and every year the theme is bike-related, with the proceeds benefitting The LiveStrong Foundation. I participated for a couple of years, and it was always a fun creative outlet.
Each year I tried something different with printing techniques. The first year I did oversize letterpress (and genetic equine manipulation). Then I mixed it up with metallic inks and then laser-cutting.
The black poster was the grand prize winner of the 2013 Neenah UnShow, so it got a little shout-out in HOW magazine. The white poster was also selected for the UnShow the year before, and the green poster was featured in the 2015 Print Regional Design Annual.
